Solar AC in India 2026: Does It Really Work?
Every summer the same question lands in our inbox: “Bhaiya, does a solar AC actually work? Will my electricity bill become zero?” Short answer — yes, solar can cool your home, but not the way most ads make you believe. Let us clear the confusion in plain language, with real rupee numbers.

What a “solar air conditioner” actually is
There is no special AC that magically makes cold air from sunshine. When a shop sells you a “solar AC”, it is usually one of two things:
- A hybrid solar AC — a normal AC wired to run on DC solar panels during the day and switch to grid power at night or on cloudy days. Often it needs its own panels and sometimes a battery.
- A normal inverter AC running on rooftop solar — your regular 5-star split AC, powered by a standard on-grid rooftop solar system that also runs your fridge, fans, lights and everything else.
The marketing word “solar AC” hides this difference. And that difference decides whether you save money or waste it.

For most families, the right-hand column simply makes more sense. You are not buying a gadget for one room. You are turning your roof into a small power plant that feeds the AC and everything else.
Why on-grid rooftop solar usually wins
Three big reasons.
1. Subsidy. Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, residential rooftop solar gets a central subsidy of ₹30,000/kW for the first 2 kW plus ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW, capped at ₹78,000. So 1 kW = ₹30,000, 2 kW = ₹60,000, 3 kW or more = ₹78,000 max. A dedicated hybrid solar AC generally does not qualify for this.
2. Net metering. With an on-grid system, extra units you generate in the day go to the grid and spin your meter backward. At night your AC draws from the grid and adjusts against those credits. Net metering is deemed feasible up to 10 kW for homes under the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020. You apply through your DISCOM after installation; approval usually takes about 15–45 days.
3. No battery headache. Because the grid acts like your “battery”, most subsidised homes do not need any battery at all. That removes a big cost and a part that wears out.
The running-cost maths (real example)
Let us take a Pune family running a 1.5-ton inverter AC for about 6–8 hours a day, plus the usual fridge, fans and lights.
- A rooftop system generates roughly 4 units/day per kW — about 1,400–1,600 units per year per kW.
- A 3 kW system therefore makes about 12–15 units/day, which comfortably covers a single AC home’s daytime cooling and most other loads.
- Typical installed cost is around ₹55,000–₹75,000 per kW before subsidy (varies by brand, panel type, DCR and city). So a 3 kW system is roughly ₹1.65–2.25 lakh before subsidy, minus up to ₹78,000 back.
- Payback for a subsidised residential rooftop system is commonly 3–4 years. After that, your cooling is close to free for years.

What you should actually buy
For a typical Indian home in 2026, we suggest:
- A 5-star BEE inverter AC (not a “solar AC”) — it uses less power, so your solar covers it easily.
- An on-grid rooftop solar system sized to your bill — often 2–3 kW for a single-AC home, more if you run two or three ACs.
- ALMM-listed panels with DCR cells — these are required to claim the subsidy. Common choice for subsidised homes is DCR Mono PERC; Mono PERC, TOPCon and bifacial exist for other cases.
- Skip the battery unless you face long, frequent power cuts. Grid + net metering does the job for most.
Check warranties too: panels usually carry a 25-year performance warranty plus about 10–12-year product warranty, and inverters typically 5–10 years.
When a hybrid or off-grid setup does make sense
Be fair — hybrid or off-grid solar has its place. If you live in an area with long daily power cuts, have no net-metering support, or run a farm pump far from the grid, a battery-backed system can be worth it. There, lithium (LFP) batteries generally last longer than tubular lead-acid, though they cost more upfront.

New PM Surya Ghar registrations closed on 6 June 2026. By mid-2026 over 40 lakh homes were solarised and more than 1 crore had registered. So do not rush to a new registration today — instead track your existing application status and watch for the next intake window.
