A residential rooftop system costs roughly ₹55,000–₹75,000 per kW installed before subsidy (indicative 2026). So a typical 3 kW system is about ₹1.6–2.2 lakh before the PM Surya Ghar subsidy, and far less after it.

It’s for residential rooftop only, the panels must be ALMM-listed with DCR (domestic) cells, and the system must be installed by a registered vendor and connected with net metering.
It’s credited to your bank account after installation, inspection and net-meter setup — officially within 30 days, in practice often 45–60 days.
Net metering lets your system export surplus daytime power to the grid and draw power back at night, so you’re billed only for your net usage. It’s what makes solar wipe out most of your bill.
Net metering is deemed feasible up to 10 kW for homes under the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020. You apply through your DISCOM after installation.

Panels typically carry a ~25-year performance warranty and a ~10–12-year product warranty. Inverters usually last 5–10 years and may be replaced once in the system’s life.
Dust can cut output noticeably, so regular cleaning matters. Rain actually helps by washing panels. Cloudy monsoon days produce less, but the yearly average still works out well.
