Allow roughly 15–25 litres per person per day. A family of four typically needs a 100–200 LPD (litres-per-day) system; a larger joint family may need 300 LPD or more.
If you currently use an electric geyser, a solar water heater can cut most of that heating cost — often a few thousand rupees a year for a family — and it usually pays for itself in about 2–4 years.
ETC (evacuated tube) systems are cheaper and common for homes. FPC (flat plate) systems are sturdier and better in hard-water or colder areas, but cost more. Your installer can advise based on your water and climate.
It still heats on cloudy days, just less. Most systems include an electric backup element for cloudy spells, so you always have hot water.
